Happy 2026 from Cascadia Heritage Farm and our Mighty Malay Chickens

Happy 2026 from Cascadia Heritage Farm

Wishing everyone a happy 2026. As we are now in February of the new year, Viggo and I are mapping out which Malay chickens we want to work with and which ones we will let breed freely. Our focus this year remains on vigor. We will be outcrossing to our Asils while continuing our linebreeding work for type. It feels like a good balance between strengthening the health of our flock and preserving the classic look of these remarkable birds.

For those new to our work, we have been developing a long term breeding effort we call the MIGHT Project, Malay Invigoration Gene Hybridization Team. It began as a father and son project to make our Malay lines more vigorous through thoughtful breeding. Over the years we have used Giant Indo to enhance size and color while allowing our Asil population to breed independently. The next step is to bring more Asil influence back into the Malays to create stronger, more self-sufficient birds. It continues to be a rewarding but challenging projects we share together.

Another exciting goal for 2026 is to take a bird or two to the Puyallup Fair / Washington State Fair for our first poultry show. This will be a new experience for us and we are excited to try it. We plan to post photos of potential show birds ahead of time so people can offer advice on which ones to bring and how to navigate registration. Any insights will be appreciated.

I am grateful for the chance to continue this work with my son. Each season teaches us something new and reinforces why we love doing projects together. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our little farm. We look forward to sharing more updates as the year unfolds. ❤️
